Still Waters - Question 1

It doesn't appear that Greg hit Laurie, although he did have a problem with controlling his temper and intimidation.

a. Would you consider Greg abusive?

b. What qualifies as abuse?

c. What do you think about the police getting involved - necessary or not?

d. Did Greg deserve to go to jail for what happened?

Still Waters - Question 2

Laurie didn't have any sexual contact with John.

a. Void of physical contact, how would you define her Internet romance with him: platonic, harmless, intimate, inappropriate or adulterous?

Her brother Drake categorized the relationship as adultery and her sister Danielle didn't agree.

b. What do you think constitutes adultery in a relationship ?

Depression is serious, encountered by many, and often suffered in silence. Greg's depression led him down a dark road late into the night with a shotgun.

a. What drove him to the brink of suicide?

b. What problems might lead to suicide?

c. How does one sink to such depths of despair that they want to end it all ?

Laurie was a stay-at-home mom.

a. Was her role valued by Greg? By Virginia ? By Laurie?

b. After Greg lost his job, he was no longer the breadwinner. Did Laurie respect him?

Greg was broke, out of work, stressed, depressed, rejected, and intimidating.

In his dire situation, would you have taken the job in Chicago if it meant leaving your family in Georgia ?

Many couples claim to stay in the midst of a failing marriage purely for the sake of the kids.

a. In this case, what impact did the strained relationship have on the boys? Junior in particular?

b. Were the boys better off with their parents staying together even with a host of problems and constantly arguing / fighting ?

b. How could Greg have fostered a better relationship with his father?

c. What about Judge Wright?

d. What affect did the Judge's rejection have on Greg's role as a husband?

Early on in Still Waters , Laurie seems to be the victim in a tough relationship, yet she stays in the marriage.

a. Why does she stay?
b. What set of circumstances creates a valid reason to leave a marriage? Explain.
c. How does six children complicate the decision?
d. What would drive someone like Laurie to the point of contemplating killing Greg as opposed to just leaving him ?

Laurie and Greg didn't have much romance in their marriage. He wanted another child and she didn't.

a. Why didn't Laurie want to give her husband a daughter?

a. How would you describe the marriage of Judge Wright and Virginia?

b. What's the source of their underlying tension?

c. How do you feel about living wealthy but unhappy vs. broke and miserable?

Both marriages had issues.
d. Which would you prefer: Greg and Laurie or the Judge and Virginia ?
